Indoor Dead Reckoning SmartINS Data

The SmartINS sensor has been tested extensively for use in unmanned ground vehicle systems. Sample data is shown below for an indoor test in which the sensor is being used to perform pure dead reckoning. A square pattern of 12'x12' was driven a total of 10 laps purely using dead reckoning and had an approximate position error of 7.4".

Outdoor Dead Reckoning SmartINS Data

More extensive testing was performed using the SmartINS sensor in environments where GPS becomes denied. Once the GPS signal is lost, the SmartINS will then perform dead reckoning to maintain position, velocity, and time. The sensor is also providing the user with the same NMEA standard GPS messages however, using the dead reckoning data to estimate time, position, and velocity. A slightly more complex pattern was driven that included more turning motion. With time there is a slight drift in heading however, performs quite well as a supplement to the GPS.
